[영문장 통째 외우기] 아놀드 베넷 '문학의 역할'

영어를 공부할 때 가장 효과적인 방법 가운데 하나로 꼽히는 것이 문장을 통째로 외우는 것입니다. 이번 주부터 외울 만한 명문장 하나씩 소개합니다. 처음으로 외워볼 문장은 영국의 소설가이자 비평가인 아놀드 베넷(Arnold Bennett, 1867~1931)이 쓴 글입니다. 그의 소설 '늙은 아내 이야기'가 뉴욕 타임즈 선정 20세기 유명소설 100선에 포함될 정도로 폭넓은 인기를 얻은 작가입니다.

Progress is the gradual result of the unending battle between human reason and human instinct, in which the former slowly but surely wins. The most powerful engine in this battle is literature. It is the storehouse of true ideas and high emotions-and life is constituted of ideas and emotions.

In a world deprived of literature, the intellectual and emotional activity of all but a few exceptionally gifted men would quickly sink and retract to a narrow circle. The broad, the noble, the generous would tend to disappear for want of suitable storage. And life would be degraded, because the wrong idea and the petty emotion would never feel the upward pull of the idea and emotions of genius.

Only by conceiving a society without literature can it be clearly realized that the function of literature is to raise the plain towards the top level of the peaks. Literature exists so that where one man has lived finely ten thousand may afterwards live finely. It is a means of life; it concerns the living essence.

문학이 없는 세계에서는 놀랄만한 재능을 가진 몇 사람을 제외한 모든 사람들의 지적, 정서적인 활동은 곧장 그 범위가 좁은 곳으로 물러나 버릴 것이다. 넓은 것, 고상한 것, 너그러운 것들은 적당한 저장소가 없기 때문에 사라져 버릴 것이다. 그리하여 생활은 타락할 것이다. 잘못된 생각과 하찮은 정서를 가진 사람들은 천재의 이념과 정서가 위로 끌어 올려주는 힘을 결코 느끼지 못할 것이기 때문이다.

오로지 문학이 없는 사회를 생각해 봄으로써만이 문학의 역할은 평범한 것을 최고의 정상 수준으로 끌어 올리는데 있다는 사실을 명백하게 깨달을 수 있다. 문학은 한 사람이 훌륭하게 산 곳에서, 만인이 나중에 훌륭하게 살 수 있도록 하기 위해서 존재하는 것이다. 문학은 생활의 수단이며, 삶의 본질에 관계하고 있다.
