Despite the freezing weather, laughter rang out at the Elder's Hall, a welfare center for elderly people located in Waegwanli Waegwaneub Chilgokgun because of the friendly care from 'Keby-Care Young Men Association' of Kyeongbuk Science University.

Twenty-one care managers from the KCYA, which is named after the university's mascot turtle Keby, have served 150 elderly for six months as one of the services for the local community.

They take turns visiting the Elder's Hall three times a week. The care managers give exercise therapy, foot massage, tape therapy as well as medical check-ups that include blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks. The care managers say that the most popular service is foot massage so they focus on the body care service.

Son Hye-jeong (39) who has served as a care manager since graduating with a major in Rehabilitation for the Elderly said, "My heart beats like that of a young girl going on a date on the day I visit the center. I could smell the affection toward people in the busyness of the Elder's Hall."

Kang Suk-ja, the volunteer manager, said, "Among the beneficiaries of the service, there are so many senior citizens who can barely make a living day to day. With the limit of time and resources, I feel sorry that we can't help everyone who asks for welfare service."

Professor Yang Hye-ju, the leader of the association, announced, "According to the survey, the aged welfare care service received good grades and we need to provide a more organized program for seniors to improve their quality of life and maintain their physical and psychological health."

영하의 날씨에도 칠곡군 왜관읍 왜관리 노인복지회관 '어르신 전당'에서는 웃음꽃이 활짝 피었다.

경북과학대학 캐비-케어 청년사업단의 따뜻한 보살핌 때문이다. 이 대학의 캐릭터인 거북이의 이름 '케비'를 붙여 지은 케비-케어 청년사업단의 케어매니저 21명은 지역 사회에 대한 서비스 지원사업의 하나로 올여름부터 6개월간 지역의 어르신들 150여명을 대상으로 봉사활동을 펼쳐왔다.

이들은 일주일에 3일씩 일손을 나눠 어르신 전당을 찾았다. 운동처방은 물론 혈압과 혈당·콜레스테롤을 체크하며 건강상담을 하고 발마사지와 테이핑 치료 서비스도 했다. 특히 대부분의 어르신들이 발마사지를 선호해 각종 신체관리 봉사에도 각별한 관심을 기울였다고 케어매니저들은 전했다.

이 대학 노인요양재활과를 졸업하고 케어매니저로 활동하고 있는 손혜정(39)씨는 "어르신을 만나러 가는 날은 데이트 나가는 처녀처럼 가슴이 두근거리곤 했다"며 "어르신 전당에 들어서면 부산함 속에서도 인간에 대한 애정과 사람 냄새가 가득했다"고 말했다.

같은 학과 동기생이자 매너저 관리를 담당한 강숙자(45)씨는 "서비스 대상 어른신 중에는 경제적으로 어렵게 하루하루를 살아가는 분들도 많았다"며 "특히 복지 서비스를 희망하는 분들이 적잖았지만, 인력과 장소의 한계 등으로 많은 분들에게 서비스를 제공하지 못해 마음이 아프다"고 했다.

이 사업의 단장을 맡고 있는 양혜주 교수는 "설문조사를 해본 결과, 노인요양관리 서비스 만족도가 좋은 평가를 받았다"며 "지역 노인들이 신체적 심리적인 건강을 유지하며 삶의 질을 향상시킬 수 있도록 프로그램을 더욱 체계적으로 제공할 필요가 있다"고 말했다.
